Every child a special creation of God

At Our Lady of Lourdes RCPS, we are committed to the education of the whole child. Pupils’ spiritual, physical, moral, social, cultural and emotional development is at the heart of our Catholic ethos. Through our PSHE, RSHE and SMSC provision, we aim to support every child to grow in knowledge and understanding, recognise the value and dignity of all people, and develop caring, respectful and sensitive attitudes towards others.

Our teaching is underpinned by our Christian faith and the belief that our deepest identity is as a child of God – created, chosen and loved by God. We strive to raise pupils’ self-esteem and enable them to become independent, responsible, healthy and confident members of society. Through dedicated lessons, enrichment opportunities, theme days, extra-curricular activities and our wider curriculum, children develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to navigate the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.

Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) forms an important part of this provision. In partnership with parents and carers, we teach PSHE and RSHE in line with National Curriculum guidance and the statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education. At Our Lady of Lourdes RCPS, we use the Ten:Ten Life to the Full Plus programme, which embraces and fulfils the statutory curriculum while reflecting the teachings and values of the Catholic Church. The programme follows a spiral approach, allowing pupils to revisit key themes at age-appropriate stages throughout their school journey.

Children learn about personal health and wellbeing, emotional development, relationships, family life, growing and changing, online safety, puberty, life cycles, the importance of trusted adults, and their role within the wider community. This learning helps pupils to make informed and responsible decisions, respect themselves and others, and move confidently through childhood and adolescence.

SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) education is embedded throughout school life and is woven into our curriculum, collective worship, enrichment activities and wider opportunities. Through these experiences, pupils develop an understanding of themselves, others and the diverse world around them, preparing them to become active, compassionate and responsible citizens.

Our curriculum is carefully planned with clear progression in knowledge and skills, ensuring that learning is built upon year by year and enabling all children to flourish academically, personally and spiritually.

Our RSE Subject Leader is Miss McErlean.
